Thomas Alan Waits(born December 7, 1949 in Pomona, California) is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. He started his career in the early 70s as a singer in dirty bars. Initially, he was deeply influenced by the beat generation (poets like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs) He could not make a living from his music although he was well accepted by the critics. The people at that time didn't like his classical bar music, pre-rock and americanastyles reminiscent of musical genres of the 50s and 40s, such as blues, jazz, and vaudeville.

Black Market Baby Lyrics

Tom Waits

She lives in a house
Thats way back off the road
Theres a man with a lantern
And he carries her soul
A coal stove and a bed
A skillet and a hound
She drove a camel through
A needle
In this sinking board walk town
Shes my black market baby
Shes my black market baby
Shes a diamond that
Wants to stay coal
Wants to stay coal
I swang out wide with her
On hells iron gate
Anything that you wanted
You could have
My eyes say their prayers to her
Sailors ring her bell
Like a moth mistakes a light bulb
For the moon and goes to hell
Shes my black market baby
Shes my black market baby
Shes a diamond that
Wants to stay coal
Wants to stay coal
Theres no prayer like desire
Theres amnesia in her kiss
Shes a swan and a pistol
And she will follow you like this
In moverly, missouri at the
Iroquois hotel
She checked in with the president
And she ran up quite a bill
(chorus)
Shes whiskey in a teacup
She gives blondes a lousy name
Shes a bonzai aphrodite
And a ticket back to spain
Shes a hard way to go
And there aint no way
To stop
Every time you play the red
The black is coming up
Shes my black market baby
Shes my black market baby
Shes a diamond that
Wants to stay coal
Wants to stay coal
